Laser Cut & CNC Machined Stainless Steel Exhaust Mixer for the Automotive Industry

An automotive manufacturer contracted Sherwood Prototype, Inc. to fabricate 250 high strength stainless steel components, which were designed for use in a diesel exhaust application. Composed of a high strength stainless steel, the customers supplied engineering drawings called out dimensions of 60.4mm in height, an outside diameter of 138.8mm, and tolerances of < .005". Manufacturing began with the laser cutting of the flat blanks, with a final trim then being cut on our 5 axis laser cutter. Stamping required the use of a multi stage process, this allows us to produce stampings that feature deep profiles, and smooth finishes. The stamped components were then CNC machined and inspected.

At Sherwood Prototype we take quality seriously, everything that we manufacture is subject to stringent quality measures. This product was dimensionally inspected on our temperature controlled CMM, which generated inspection reports which we used to create the required CoC. This entire project including tooling was completed and delivered in just 3 weeks,
